Germany and France Push for Stronger EU Defense Amid Rising Global Tensions

Berlin and Paris are calling for a more unified European defense strategy as conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe continue to unsettle global security. The joint proposal, unveiled during a summit in Brussels, emphasizes the need for Europe to reduce its dependence on U.S. military power and strengthen its ability to respond independently to crises.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that “Europe must be able to defend itself and protect its interests without always relying on others.” French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this sentiment, urging member states to commit more resources to defense budgets and to invest in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber defense, and next-generation weapons systems.
