The National Alternative Alliance has penned a powerful open letter to President William Ruto, raising alarm over what it describes as a “dire decline” in Kenya’s socioeconomic state and urging urgent reforms to prevent further national unrest ahead of the symbolic Saba Saba Day.

In the detailed communication released to the media this morning, the alliance expressed deep concern over the rising poverty levels across the country, deteriorating public trust, and increasing tension linked to governance, police brutality, and what it termed as “recycled leadership.”

With Saba Saba Day—July 7—approaching, a historic date often marked by civic demonstrations and remembrance of Kenya’s pro-democracy struggle, the Alliance urged President Ruto to take proactive steps to de-escalate tensions and avoid potential national crisis.

Among its strongest demands, the Alliance called for:

  • An Immediate End to Abductions and Intimidation: The letter accuses state agencies of using abductions and intimidation tactics against dissenting voices and activists. The Alliance insists that such actions undermine democracy and stoke public fear.

  • Compensation for Victims of Police Brutality: The group is demanding compensation for families who lost loved ones or had members injured during past demonstrations, labeling the continued silence from the state as “inhumane and unjust.”

  • Dropping Charges Against Activists: Describing the criminalization of protestors as an affront to the constitution, the Alliance has asked the President to drop all charges against activists arrested during civic action in the last two years.

  • Waiver of Mortuary Fees: In an emotional appeal, they also requested that all mortuary and burial fees for victims of police brutality be waived by the state, terming it a small but meaningful act of justice and dignity for grieving families.

  • Launch of a National Dialogue Framework: To restore public trust and encourage inclusive governance, the Alliance proposes a nationwide dialogue that includes civil society, faith leaders, youth, opposition, and marginalized communities. The goal is to align national policies with the real needs of the Kenyan people.

  • A Moratorium on Recycled Leaders: The Alliance criticized what it termed as the “unending recycling of failed leaders,” and called on President Ruto to prioritize merit, innovation, and integrity in public appointments.

  • Policy Review and Adherence to Evidence-Based Governance: The letter concluded with a plea for the President to focus on policies that have demonstrated measurable success and to discard those that have failed to deliver results.

The Alliance’s open letter has already sparked national conversations across social media, with many Kenyans praising the boldness of the call while others await the government’s official response.

As the political temperature continues to rise ahead of Saba Saba Day, all eyes now turn to President Ruto and how his administration will navigate this growing wave of public concern.
