Government Takes Stand Against Fake Degrees to Protect Education Integrity

Posted on April 9, 2025April 9, 2025 by admin

Minister of Higher Education Dr. Jessie Kabwila has underscored the serious threat posed by fake degrees and substandard education, emphasizing that these issues undermine the value of legitimate academic qualifications. Speaking at a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Capital Hill on Wesday, Dr. Kabwila reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring integrity within the higher education sector.

“Fake degrees are not only a deception but a direct attack on the credibility of our educational institutions,” Dr. Kabwila stated. She called upon educational institutions, regulatory bodies, and the public to unite in the fight against this pervasive issue. “By doing so, we can ensure that genuine academic achievements are recognized and valued, fostering a culture of excellence in education.”

The Minister highlighted the need to protect the future of Malawian youth and restore trust in the educational system. “We must take a stand against fake degrees to safeguard hard work and genuine accomplishment,” she urged.

Dr. Ambumbilire Phiri, Chief Executive Officer for the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE), echoed Dr. Kabwila’s sentiments, noting that the proliferation of fake degrees not only devalues legitimate qualifications but also poses significant threats to the workforce and society at large. Dr. Phiri expressed NCHE’s readiness to assist institutions seeking accreditation, ensuring they meet the standards set by the Ministry of Higher Education.

“Facilitating the accreditation process is crucial,” she said. “NCHE is committed to fostering a culture of quality education, ensuring that all institutions comply with necessary regulations and contribute positively to Malawi’s educational landscape.”

The press conference was also attended by Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Levis Eneya, Chief Education Officers Madame Ellin Rambiki and Madame Jane Banda, alongside other senior officials from the ministry and NCHE.

The government’s proactive stance aims to not only mitigate the impact of fraudulent degrees but also enhance the overall reputation of higher education in Malawi, paving the way for a brighter future for its youth.
